Waynesboro capitalists were eager to invest in Metcalfe Manfg. Co. in 1901

A few years back the Archives and Museum compiled and published a book on the Metcalfe family and their Quincy Engine Company. Mr. Metcalfe often found himself at his wits end with too little money and too few workers. He would do what he could and he made some amazing machines. However, it was often necessary to seek capital funding in Waynesboro and Chambersburg. One such time was in 1901:

April 25, 1901 – The Metcalfe Manfg. Co. Will Be Formed With $25,000 Capital To Build Gasoline and Gas Engines –

Waynesboro is to have another new industry. The story has been an oft-repeated one thus far this year and in this instance it loses none of its unction with the repetition, because the new manufacturing plant promises to develop into one of the town’s busiest and most profitable establishments.
