Knoxville crews used more than 36,400 gallons of brine on city roads during recent snowstorm

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Wintry weather brought several inches of snow to East Tennessee last Friday and into the weekend, prompting school closures and calls for people to stay off the roads.

Leading up to the snowstorm, crews from different departments went to work treating the roads with brine, meant to help them resist freezing over. In Knoxville, a spokesperson said crews used around 36,400 gallons of brine during the snow event to keep the roads as safe as possible.

Crews across the state also used salt to keep the roads clear of ice. The snowstorm brought concerns that as the snow thawed over the weekend, it could refreeze overnight and turn into ice, causing hazardous conditions for drivers.
