“It felt a little lenient towards the New York way” – Lou Williams says the Lynx have every right to be upset with the Game 5 officiating

A day after the New York Liberty were crowned the new WNBA champions, the conversation about the officiating in Game 5 continued. The crew of the show “Run It Back” agreed that some questionable calls ruined the Minnesota Lynx’s chances of capturing a fifth title. In fact, former NBA Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams felt that the calls leaned more towards New York for the entire series.

The finals series was a hard-fought, dramatic affair that saw neither team give the other an inch. The series decider provided more intense action as the Lynx held on to a 60-58 lead with ten seconds left in regulation. However, Liberty superstar Breanna Stewart—after getting away with a clear traveling violation—drew a foul from Alanna Smith that sent her to the line.

After the Lynx’s challenge was rebuffed by the officials, Stewie hit the free throws to tie the game and send it to overtime, where New York eventually prevailed, 67-62, for their first title in league history.
