This is a tax that, if passed, will never go away.
Currently the voters in 57 counties have passed an enabling referendum.
One of the provisions of the law is that, after passage, if any school district pledges its share of proceeds to pay off the bonds, the sales tax cannot be voted out of existence until after the bonds are paid off.
Let me tell you, should McHenry County school board decide to ask for referendum passage, there will be a lot more “Vote No” signs than were posted against the 33% operating fund tax hike put on the ballot prior to the November election…
