Games delayed are not games denied: Bishop McDevitt is new ‘Area M’ Special Olympics host

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Maybe it’s precisely because of how disappointed people were a year ago that Midstate Special Olympians got the good news they learned Monday: The big “Area M” spring games — featuring as many as 1,000 athletes and thousands of family members and volunteers — are back after a one-year absence.

They’ll happen April 16 at Harrisburg’s Bishop McDevitt High School, “which is a wonderful venue,” said Stephanie Reisinger, the organization’s volunteer coordinator. “I’m really excited to go there.”

Nearly a year ago, Reisinger had to confirm the games — for a quarter century, the region’s marquee track-and-field competition for athletes with special needs — wouldn’t happen in 2024 because past venues couldn’t host them, and organizers couldn’t find a replacement venue in time. In part, the games were a victim of their own success: The number of athletes — and especially the 80 or school school buses required to transport them and park for the day wherever the games were — limited the number of potential facilities.
