Harrisburg diocese bishop chose surprising pastoral letter topic because the problem’s extent here surprised him

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Single-topic “pastoral letters,” as they’re known, from a Roman Catholic bishop here are rare — before this week, the last one came out in 2013. So they’re notable when they do emerge.

Previous letters focused on timeless religious topics: Lent in the 2012 and 2013 letters from the late Bishop Joseph McFadden, or the earthly life as a pilgrimage to heaven in the 2009 letter from Bishop Kevin Rhoades. The topic of Bishop Timothy Senior’s letter is contemporary and not — at least not on the surface — specifically Catholic.
