McGee outpaces WCU in 44-34 thriller

Mercer football got back into the win column with a 44-34 win this past Saturday against No. 24 Western Carolina University in Macon. The win improves the team to 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in Southern Conference play.

Quarterback Whitt Newbauer ‘28 led the team with 234 passing yards and made it into the end zone to snag a rushing touchdown for himself. Dwayne McGee ‘25 rushed for a career-high 223 yards on 18 carries for two touchdowns during the game. Kelin Parsons ‘25 had four receptions totaling 102 yards, including a 42-yard catch, that helped push the Bears down the field and into scoring positions throughout the game.

In a press conference after the game, Head Coach Mike Jacobs said that WCU’s 14-point first quarter was less a reflection of poor defense on Mercer’s part and more the Catamounts’ offense being sharp from the beginning of the game…
