Next week, Michiana will face frigid temperatures, with highs in the single digits and lows below zero. If this trend continues, January 2025 could become South Bend’s first below-average January seen in years.
This is unusual, as recent Januarys—and most months in general—have been warmer than normal. Since 2022, 27 months have exceeded their average temperatures, compared to just three cooler-than-average months, reflecting a clear warming trend linked to climate change. If this January stays cold, it will mark the fourth below-average month in three years.
While next week’s cold snap will be intense, it won’t surpass the coldest week of 2024. Despite last year’s frigid spell, January 2024 still ended 2 degrees above average.
