ILA Strike begins at Alabama state docks

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Thousands of longshoremen are on strike across the nation Tuesday, and that includes hundreds in Mobile.

A picket line started near the Alabama state docks. This picket line started at midnight Tuesday as the contract between the International Longshoremen’s Association and U.S. Maritime Alliance expired.

They’re here in solidarity with the thousands of other longshoremen across the country who’ve stopped work waiting for a better contact . The ILA is asking for 77% higher wages to compensate for rising inflation, another big concern is how and when automation may replace jobs.

Locally, the strike’s threat would affect the APM-Terminal in Mobile and the cargo that flows in and out of it. Alabama Port Authority President John Driscoll hoped to minimize the impact of the strike…
