Mobile leaders celebrate completion of Old Shell Overpass project

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Mobile leaders are celebrating the completion of a project that they say has enhanced the Old Shell Overpass.

According to a city news release, city leaders including Mayor Sandy Stimpson held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2 following the completion of the project to overhaul the railroad overpass on Old Shell Road.

The project, which was a public-private partnership that was made possible with support from the Alabama Export Railroad, began in June and resulted in a months-long road closure .

It provided the following enhancements, according to the release:

  • Improved landscaping and hardscaping
  • New green plantlings
  • New sidewalks
  • A built-in irrigation system
  • Maintenance of drainage repairs to inlets and underground piping
  • Enhanced LED lighting
  • Cleaning and repainting of the pillars and bridge assets
  • Repaving of Old Shell Road
