‘He loved us’: Montgomery police mourn co-worker they were trying to help

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Working in law enforcement often evolves into a familial relationship, and applies to everyone in the department, whether they carry a badge or not.

That’s why hearts are now heavy at the Montgomery Police Department, as they mourn Jeffrey Johnson, a sanitation employee who officers describe as much a part of the department as anyone in a uniform.

Deputy Chief Denise Barnes recalled how his presence always brought joy to the department. She said his work routine of going from office to office with a smile on his face and talking with everyone let them know he loved them, and the feeling was mutual…
