Mobile County outpaces state, national GDP growth in 2023

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Accounting for 17% of Alabama’s gross domestic product growth in 2023, Mobile County’s growth ranked second in the state behind Madison County, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Mobile County grew its Real Gross Domestic Product by $1.13 billion, a 5.14% increase from 2022, according to the BEA. Meanwhile, Alabama’s statewide growth came in at 2.85%, and the national rate was 2.89%.

With a sharp increase in employment counts, Mobile Chamber President and CEO Bradley Byrne said that additional money is driving higher wages.

“It’s the average person who’s at the lower part of our job scale who are now seeing opportunities to get jobs that pay them much higher amounts of money because these jobs we’re bringing to Mobile are high paying jobs,” Byrne said. “So if you go from a minimum wage job to one of these new jobs we’re making, we change the quality of your life. That’s what everybody wanted to see happen. And it is happening.”…
