Over 13,000 Alabama students apply for school choice program

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Over 13,000 students have applied to receive tax credits through the CHOOSE Act to help fund their education.

It provides up to $7,000 for students to spend on textbooks, tuition, and other educational needs. Republicans and Democrats disagree on how this program is benefitting schools.

“We choose, using the word choose, we choose to be here everyday and we choose to work hard for our children. And they show up, and they’re ready to learn too. So, I’m very blessed to be part of a school that’s got that type of culture and history behind it,” said Laura Jockisch, principal at Rock Quarry Elementary School.
