Potential record-breaking voter turnout could cause increased security issues

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — On Nov. 5, many are predicting record voter turnout here in Alabama and across the nation. With that will come extra security at many precincts. From deciding who will be our next president to a newly formed congressional district in Alabama, this is an election expected to draw hundreds of thousands of Alabamians to the polls.

The chairman of the Jefferson County Board of Registrars, Barry Stephenson, said, “We have over half a million registered voters in Jefferson County. We’re expecting well over 300,000 to turn out next Tuesday. So, in raw numbers, that’s a lot of folks. And that puts pressure on the parking lot, on the traffic, traffic lights, the turn signal. So we’re trying to prepare for that.”

Stephenson said voters need to be patient. Even with hundreds of thousands expected to turnout, he doesn’t expect any security issues, although they will be prepared for anything. Stephenson said, “We will have sheriff’s deputies in the area of every precinct. We’ve talked to almost every municipal police force also, so they’ll be aware in and engaged if needed until next Tuesday.”…
