Security changes underway after review of convicted murderer’s escape in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction has completed its after-action review and is making several changes after the escape of a Bertie Correctional Institution prisoner in Orange County.

On Aug. 13, convicted murderer Ramone Alston freed himself from leg restraints and jumped out of a transport van upon arrival at UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus. Alston was on the run for several days before he was captured at a hotel in Kannapolis , where he was staying under a woman’s name.

While the new after-action review on the escape is comprised entirely of matters related to prison system security and is confidential, the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction shared several actions that are beginning or are underway as a result of the report’s findings and recommendations…
