SJSU Starters Dylan Hampsten, Hudson Mesa put on scholarship

Coming off a heart-breaking 54-52 double-overtime loss at Washington State last week, the San Jose State Spartans bounced back with a feel-good moment at Wednesday’s practice. It was announced that two walk-ons in starting roles were put on scholarship.

After a post-practice discussion at midfield, head coach Ken Niumatalolo told the team to turn around and look at the video board in CEFCU Stadium. On the screen was the announcement that offensive lineman Hudson Mesa and defensive lineman Dylan Hampsten had both been placed on scholarship.

Hampsten joined the program in 2023 as a freshman walk-on and did not see the field last year. This offseason as a redshirt freshman, he skyrocketed all the way into a starting role at defensive end. Hampsten has 8 tackles, 1 sack and 1 forced fumble so far this season.

InsideTheSpartans.com interviewed Hampsten during training camp. About being a walk-on, Hampsten said at the time, “I’m looking to change that, hopefully. It’s been a big motivator. I always play with a chip on your shoulder.”…
