Burke County to break ground on animal shelter, EMS base; new shelter will double capacity

Burke County officials will soon break ground on a new EMS building and a new animal shelter.

A groundbreaking ceremony for both the new EMS headquarters and the new animal shelter is set for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 4 at the site of the new animal shelter, next to the Burke County 911 Center on Kirksey Drive in Morganton. Kay Draughn, clerk to the Burke County Board of Commissioners, said parking for the groundbreaking will be in the 911 center parking area.

The county is accepting construction bids on the two projects. Those bids from contractors are expected to be opened on Sept. 24, according to bid documents. The combined cost for both projects is estimated at between $12 million and $14 million, according to county officials.

EMS Headquarters
