WVU researcher warns about stigma that warning labels are creating

MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) – Warning labels are meant to help educate people in the cancer risks associated with using alcoholic beverages and cigarettes.

However, official said that using a certain type of language can risk stigmatizing the people who are struggling with misuse of these products.

“When we are talking about alcohol which can be an addiction similar to smoking,” said Dannell Boatman. “We are talking about something that is stigma condition. Alcohol misuse is highly stigmatization and we need to be cautious on how we frame warning labels on avoiding stigmatizing language.”…
