ROGERSVILLE — Gavin Lawson scored seven points in overtime as the Cherokee Chiefs earned a gritty 69-66 victory over the Phelps (Kentucky) Hornets in the opening round of the Big H BBQ Christmas Bash on Thursday, Dec. 19.
The Hornets led 32-25 at the half. The Chiefs made their run in the fourth quarter and tied the score 57-57 with 1:12 to go on a Lawson three-pointer. Braxton Markham hit another three to give the Chiefs a 60-59 lead with 1:00 remaining. The Hornets went up by one, and Jaxon Markham made a free throw with 21 seconds left to send the game into overtime tied 61-61.
In overtime, Lawson hit a three to put the Chiefs up for good, 64-63, with 2:50 to go. Lawson scored seven of the Chiefs’ eight points in the extra period. With Cherokee ahead 69-66, the Hornets missed two shot attempts to tie the game…
