SEATTLE — The Washington Cascades are among the snowiest places in the lower 48 states.
All that snow, thousands and tons of it, is often perched atop steep mountainsides. When you add accumulating rain or snow, jarring winds, or quick melting warmups, large amounts of snow can quickly destabilize. The resulting avalanche can flow downhill up to 100 mph, swallowing anything in its path.
