CMU College of Medicine Expands with Downtown Saginaw Campus

Central Michigan University’s College of Medicine is planning to open a new campus in downtown Saginaw by 2028. The 100,000-square-foot facility will cost $100 million to construct, with a $200 million fundraising campaign already underway.

The planned expansion will allow first- and second-year medical students to study in Saginaw for the first time. Currently, these students complete their initial coursework at the university’s Mount Pleasant campus, while third- and fourth-year students utilize facilities in Saginaw.

This initiative is part of a larger effort to develop Saginaw’s “medical diamond” district, which includes existing health care providers like Covenant HealthCare and MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw (formerly Ascension St. Mary’s). These organizations attract patients and medical professionals to the area, enhancing Saginaw’s reputation as a regional medical hub.
