The romanticism of a lone lighthouse, its shape slightly shrouded by fog is an alluring image, made even more mystical when the lighthouse stands empty, surviving the storms of time. The Burrows Island Lighthouse is such a place, although it will not remain empty for long.
Burrows Island is located off the waters of Rosario Strait at the southern tip of the San Juan archipelago. Densely forested with a rough shoreline, the island, at first glance, seems fairly isolated, save for one beacon of light. Burrows Island has a historic and working light station perched on its southwest cliff. First lit in 1906, this light continues to guide mariners through the tides and eddies of the Salish Sea. Now it’s time for this light and the adjacent keepers’ quarters to get an upgrade.
