Keisling introduces legislation to impose 5% lottery tax

NASHVILLE | Legislation filed by State Rep. Kelly Keisling, R-Byrdstown, would see a 5% tax placed on the sale of lottery tickets in Tennessee.

The proposed legislation is the result of talks spearheaded by Scott County Mayor Jerried Jeffers, who first suggested a 5% tax on lottery ticket sales last year as a way to increase revenues for county governments.

Keisling on Dec. 19 filed House Bill 0051, which would require each county in the state to levy a 5% tax on the sale of lottery tickets. So far, the bill does not have companion legislation in the State Senate. Nor has any action been taken on the bill, as the legislature will not convene for this year’s session until Saturday…
