New Carlsbad law targets smoking in multi-unit buildings

CARLSBAD, Calif. — A new law forbidding smoking in and around multi-unit rental and owned buildings with three or more units goes into effect Wednesday.

Carlsbad approved the law, meant to protect residents from second-hand smoke, back in August. The ban makes Carlsbad the first San Diego County city to prohibit smoking and vaping. A total of 80 cities and counties statewide have enacted smoke-free housing laws for apartments, condos and multi- unit homes.

The new Carlsbad smoking ban includes e-cigarettes and cannabis. It allows private enforcement, meaning landlords and tenants can take legal action against people caught illicitly smoking or vaping…
