AUGUSTA, Mich. — A special ceremony was held at Fort Custer in Augusta to honor the German-American community in Michigan, as well as around the world.
The ceremony centers around Volkstrauertag, which is Germany’s national day of mourning.

There are dozens of German POW gravesites at Fort Custer, because at one point, the site had thousands of German POWs.
After the war, some returned to Germany but came back to the United States.
The ceremony has been held for 71 years now…
