Schools face funding cliff as pandemic relief money runs out

WASHINGTON — Schools across the country are bracing for a funding cliff at the end of this month. The last batch of pandemic relief money from the federal government runs out soon.

During the pandemic, schools benefited from a historic injection of federal cash. Altogether, Congress approved almost $190 billion in education relief.

The U.S. Department of Education says states have until Sept. 30, 2024, to commit the remaining federal pandemic relief funds authorized in the final spending package, the American Rescue Plan. If funds are obligated by the deadline, they can still be spent through the end of December 2024 or, if an extension is granted, through March 2026…
