Winchendon’s $9.5 million water main replacement project is under way: How long will it take?

A seven-man crew at Sherbert Road in Ashburnham has started the $9.5 million Winchendon municipal water pipeline replacement project, which serves 2,100 homes and businesses in Winchendon.

On Monday, Sept. 16, construction started at the Ashburnham-Winchendon Water Filtration Plant on Lake Road in Ashburnham. The crew will eventually go down Sherbert Rd and end in front of North Ashburnham Rd. The replacement project is five miles long, and as of Tuesday, Sept. 24, the construction crew has replaced over 1,000 feet of pipe and is replacing about 200 feet of pipe every day.

The major water pipeline replacement project was planned to break ground in late July or August. However, due to delays in product approval, construction didn’t start until last Monday. Construction will continue every weekday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. until the project is completed and if weather allows the crew to continue working…
