Burial site for enslaved people found at The Hermitage

HERMITAGE, Tenn. (WKRN) — After decades of searching, a significant discovery has been made at President Andrew Jackson’s property, The Hermitage. Experts found what they believe are 28 graves belonging to slaves .

“This is the field corridor, and this is where most of the slaves that worked as field hands lived,” Tony Guzzi, Chief of Preservation and Site Operations at The Hermitage, said.

On a private tour of Jackson’s 1000-acre property, Guzzi showed News 2 where enslaved people both worked and lived on the Hermitage. “At its height, there were 170 slaves living on the property and that was shortly after Jackson died,” Guzzi said…
