Interstate-10 re-opens after winter storm shutdown

JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – A 200-mile stretch of interstate-10 through the Panhandle that was closed for most of the day has completely reopened.

The Department of Transportation reopened the last section from Jackson County to Tallahassee at 7:00 p.m. central time Thursday night. DOT managers shut it down from Pensacola to just west of Tallahassee around 6:00 Wednesday night, due to ice, especially on the bridges and overpasses.

They put a total of 250 people on the job, working around the clock to remove the ice. They’ve been using a prep on the road surface, as well as all types of heavy equipment like dump trucks equipped with plows, bulldozers, road graters, front-end loaders, and almost anything that can push the snow and ice to the shoulder of the road.

“So we were doing a preemptive strike to put down spray to try to prevent ice from forming on those bridges. We’ve had snowplows and other equipment that have been cycling through since the snowstorm began, and we’re continuing those operations over the next day or two,” Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson Ian Satter said…
