A single American flag will be raised Wednesday over Veterans Memorial Square at East Ferry to honor a Jamestown man who was killed during the Battle of the Bulge.
Francis X. Zweir, a private in the U.S. Army, was killed in action 80 years ago, Jan. 15, 1945, in Luxembourg as he was crossing the Wiltz River. The Arnold-Zweir Post 22 of the American Legion, which was partially named in his honor, will commemorate the anniversary with the flag.
Zweir, born Feb. 1, 1922, was raised on Narragansett Avenue with his siblings, Isabel, Margaret and Steve. He joined the military in 1942 three days after Christmas, at the age of 20, and was assigned to Company L, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division. The division trained in Texas for 15 months then set sail for England in March 1944.
