The latest concept from hospitality group Empty Stomach Hospitality is now serving up pizza slices from its delightfully kitschy storefront in downtown San Antonio. After trying it out for myself, I can say that with certainty that Leo’s Hideout is a welcome addition to the city’s central dining scene, especially for those who appreciate a quick, affordable bite.
I stopped by the pizza shop a little after 11 a.m. on a Wednesday, just before the lunch rush began. The senses were grabbed by sights, scents and sounds from the moment I entered Leo’s Hideout. The walls are covered with all kinds of retro sport memorabilia, including a scoreboard, to match the 1980s pizza parlour aesthetic, which was rounded out by a corresponding playlist of arena rock. The aroma of freshly baked pizza cut through the visual feast of team flags and framed black-and-white photos like a knife through butter, and after a few steps, I was at the counter ready to try the pie.
I ordered a single slice of pepperoni pizza ($4.50) paired with a fountain drink ($3.50) that I self-served after asking someone where the soda machine was hiding. Around a corner, I filled my cup with Coca-Cola Zero Sugar and found a seat at a bar facing the window, with a view of outside. Not long after, my precious pizza was brought to me by a server, and I proceeded to have a photoshoot with the hot-to-go slice before adding my preferred amount of red chili flakes and parmesan cheese…
