Dozens of people fight national blood shortage in Middletown

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) — More than 100 people rolled up their sleeves to donate blood Sunday morning in Middletown.

A total of 107 people made appointments for Sunday at the Elks Lodge at 44 Maynard St. The American Red Cross partnered with the WeLoveU campaign to collect 88 pints of blood.

January is National Blood Donor Month and staff say it’s important to give now as many parts of the country see a drop in  blood donations because of severe weather.

Its important to donate blood to avoid shortages during the holidays

Jocelyn Hillard, American Red Cross Connecticut/Rhode Island Regional Communications Director, told News 8, “We rely on our blood donors to keep those appointments to make and give blood so that way if we do need to cancel a blood drive due to winter storm or if someone isn’t feeling well, that we’re covering that and ensuring that we meet those goals.”…
