POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department (TTPD) reported an arrest after an extensive fraud investigation. Johnathan Sawaged, 29, of Poughkeepsie, is facing numerous felony charges.

On October 17, 2024, police received a complaint that Sawaged had reportedly mishandled payments and documents while working as a certified tax preparer for a local company. During the ensuing investigation, detectives determined that Sawaged allegedly stole over $8,000 in company funds.
Sawaged was taken into custody on January 21. He was charged with third-degree grand larceny and 16 counts of second-degree forgery.

TTPD stated there is no evidence indicating that individual clients of the company were directly defrauded. Sawaged was arraigned at the Town of Poughkeepsie Justice Court before being released on probation.
