BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — A young mother is speaking out as she faces colon cancer while pregnant.
Alysun Zwanzig is a hardworking, 25-year-old mother of two with a third on the way. She was 23 weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with stage four metastatic colorectal cancer.
“The doctor told me, ‘I really don’t think that this is cancer. I really think that this is benign and is not cancerous.’ At that point, they wouldn’t really do anything about it because it was not harming anything or bothering anything. I had the biopsy done, the results came back that it was a metastatic form of colon cancer,” said Zwanzig. Shortly after the diagnosis, she found out the cancer had spread throughout her body and was terminal. The cancer spread to her liver, on her bones and potentially in her lungs.
