Hurst Fire threatens the San Fernando Valley near Sylmar

The Hurst Fire, which broke out Tuesday night near Sylmar as the Los Angeles area was already reeling from two others, has now burned 700 acres as of midday Wednesday, officials reported.

Even as the fire continued to grow with 0% containment, the mood was calm at the Ritchie Valens Recreation Center in Pacoima Wednesday morning, where an evacuation shelter has been set up. Jerome Thierry with the Red Cross said the shelter saw 18 evacuees overnight and that there were no injuries to report.

Authorities say those who require additional time to evacuate and those with pets and livestock should leave immediately.

Westbound lanes on I-210 are closed at Roxford St. with all traffic diverted off Roxford St., per CalTrans.
