Ann Arbor ban on certain ‘junk fees’ celebrated by renter rights advocates

ANN ARBOR, MI — Renter rights advocates in Ann Arbor are celebrating a new ban on rental “junk fees” such as apartment waitlist fees that in some cases have topped $6,000.

City Council voted unanimously Monday, Jan. 6, to give final approval to the new ordinance prohibiting landlords from charging various pre-tenancy fees.

“This marks a huge step forward for tenants who simply cannot afford these outrageously expensive junk fees,” Nathan Kim of the Ann Arbor Tenants Union said in a statement…
