Drought conditions and La Niña among contributing factors for devastating fires

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — 2025 is kicking off with some of the most destructive wildfires in Los Angeles County. While the fires have not yet been added to the top 20 list, more than 1,000 structures have been burned or destroyed in the Southern California fires, according to the Associated Press. Five deaths have also been reported.

The Palisades Fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday before several other fires broke out in and around Los Angeles.

Some contributing factors are the aggressive winds fanning flames at a rapid pace. Gusts as high as 100 mph were reported at Mt Lukens Truck Trail near La Crescenta, northeast of Los Angeles. Other gusts around 70 mph in Altadena helped spread the Eaton Fire Tuesday night…
