Navy destroyer to honor former Mississippi Governor

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (WLOX) – Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced the names of three guided missile destroyers on Wednesday.

One ship will be named USS Ray Mabus (DDG 147), in honor of the former Mississippi Governor and former Secretary of the Navy.

Mabus was elected Governor of Mississippi in 1988 and served until 1992.

In 2009, Mabus became the 75th Secretary of the Navy. During his tenure, the Navy went from building fewer than five ships per year to having more than 70 under contract.
