Police recover damaged parts from van in Layton hit-and-run

LAYTON, Utah ( ABC4 ) — The Layton Police Department said it has recovered the damaged parts from a van believed to have hit and killed a 41-year-old man before fleeing the scene earlier this month.

The parts were reportedly found at an auto repair business where police say they were replaced with undamaged parts in an attempt to conceal the evidence of the hit-and-run. One man, identified as Jesus Ismael Casillas, 30, was taken into custody.

Police say the van is allegedly registered under Casillas’ name, but he was not the driver at the time of the incident. According to court documents, detectives believe when Casillas learned of the fatal hit-and-run, he used his access at the auto repair shop to fix the vehicle.

The Layton Police Department said Casillas’ actions effectively “hindered, delayed, and prevented” the investigation into the hit-and-run by concealing and removing evidence.
