From the Pulpit: Omaha area religious leaders share messages of faith

A loving Savior sends us personal messages referred to as “tender mercies.” Tender mercies are very personal and individualized. They can be blessings specific to an individual that provide strength, protection, assurance, guidance, comfort and support at different times in our lives. These messages from the Lord can comfort and reassure us. Tender mercies come in quiet ways, not by coincidence, but by heaven’s grace. They are real and do not occur randomly. Faithfulness, obedience to the commandments, and humility invite tender mercies into our lives. God will intervene and help us realize how much he loves us. Tender mercies provide comfort and guide us throughout life. The Lord knows each of us individually and is in the details of our lives. He is always with us. He wants to help us and give us strength to learn and grow while overcoming challenges. It is important that we are prepared to recognize these events.

Psalms 145:9 states, “The Lord is good to all; and His tender mercies are over all his works.” Tender mercies are available to all, not just those who appear to be better. It is what is in our hearts, our desires and our obedience that determine whether we are ready to recognize God’s tender mercies. Our job is to be ready to receive the tender mercies intended for us. We can do that by keeping the commandments and developing a relationship with the Savior.

Tender mercies can be powerful, and we shouldn’t underestimate or overlook that power. When speaking of tender mercies, Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints said, “The simpleness, sweetness and constancy of tender mercies of the Lord will do much to fortify and protect us in the troubled times in which we do now live. When words cannot provide the solace we need or express the joy we feel, when it is simply futile to attempt to explain that which is unexplainable, when logic and reason cannot yield adequate understanding about the injustices and inequities of life, when mortal experience and evaluation are insufficient to produce a desired outcome, and when it seems that perhaps we are so totally alone, truly we are blessed by the tender mercies of the Lord.”

It is my prayer that we recognize tender mercies in all aspects of our lives…
