Winter Storm Update: Lake Charles snowfall ranks as second most all-time!

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – This week’s winter storm brought more snow than Lake Charles has seen in well over a century.

After further review, the National Weather Service has determined that the snowfall was 5.5 inches, making this event the second-highest of all time. This also means this is now a modern-day record, as the top event occurred in 1895.

All data from the National Weather Service is considered preliminary until it is reviewed further, and that was the case with the previous measurement of 4.8 inches.

It is important to remember that snowfall is just like rain, and no two locations, even those within close proximity, ever receive the exact same amount.

Speaking of snowfall amounts, areas of Jeff Davis Parish and farther east into Acadiana received 8 to 10 inches of snow in some places. Totals higher than that are possible in some very localized locations.

It is also possible that higher totals were the result of snow drifts. That means the wind pushed snow into higher piles and is not a true representation of snowfall…
