Earthquakes in the Lowcountry could be aftershocks of big one over a century ago

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – South Carolina is no stranger to earthquakes. In fact, the most famous earthquake on the East Coast was more than an century ago in the Charleston area.

If you take a history tour of downtown Charleston, more than likely the guide will point out the earthquake stabilizers in homes and businesses all over the historic district. These rods are a hint of the big quake that destroyed many Charleston buildings and knocked others off kilter.

While no destructive earthquakes have struck in the last century…there are many small earthquakes in the Lowcountry month after month. It’s possible some of the shaking today is aftershocks of that big one…
