Utah man appeals conviction for 2017 murder, court disagrees ‘on all fronts’

SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — The Utah Court of Appeals denied an appeal made by Lucas Deprey — a man convicted of a 2017 murder — on Friday, declaring that it disagrees “on all fronts and affirm[s] Deprey’s convictions.”

In 2020, Lucas Deprey was convicted of murder and obstruction of justice for the fatal shooting of Ever Hernandez in Murray several years prior, according to opinion documents from the Utah Court of Appeals.

During the trial, Deprey testified that he shot Hernandez in an act of self-defense . He said Hernandez, a rumored cartel member, had given the “green light” to kill Deprey’s friend and threatened to kill Deprey too if he kept asking questions. Deprey claimed he saw Hernandez reach across his body and shot him in the head in response.

“I feared it was my life or his life and I made the decision instantly on the spot,” Deprey testified during the trial…
