Golden Arches Topple Palm Trees: McDonald’s Overtakes In-N-Out in California as Top Burger Chain

The iconic crisscrossed palm trees outside In-N-Out Burger locations are a familiar sight to Californians and visitors alike. For years, the chain has been seen as a quintessential stop for first-time travelers to the Golden State.

However, a recent study by Bet California reveals that McDonald’s has dethroned In-N-Out as California’s favorite fast-food chain. The study, based on search engine interest from California residents between November 2023 and November 2024, excluded coffee chains.

McDonald’s deep connection to the state might explain its dominance. Founded in San Bernardino in 1940, the global fast-food giant has grown to over 38,000 locations worldwide.
