After a clear Tuesday that reopened the Nevada-California border on I-80, snow is expected this afternoon and throughout the rest of the week on Donner Pass. Here’s everything you need to know:
What will the weather be like today, Wednesday?
Snow showers are expected after 1 p.m. on Donner Pass, the summit in the Sierra Nevada that connects Nevada and California along the I-80 Highway. The total daytime snow accumulation expected this afternoon is less than 1 inch. After 10 p.m. the possible new snow accumulation on the pass is 1 to 2 inches.
It will also be breezy with a southwest wind providing gusts up to 35 mph, but typically staying within the 15 to 20 mph range.
Do I need chains to cross Donner Pass?
As of Wednesday at 1 p.m., yes. Westbound semitrucks are being screened five miles west of Reno at Mogul. Truck drivers must have maximum chains in their possession to proceed. Permit loads are prohibited.
Eastbound trucks are being screened at Applegate in Placer County. Similar to westbound trucks, drivers must have maximum chains in their possession and permit loads are prohibited.
What is the weather on I-80 like the rest of the week?
Snow is expected on the pass Thursday and Friday as well. Thursday travelers are expected to see less than half an inch during the day and 2 to 4 inches possible that night. Before 4 p.m. Friday, the pass is expected to have 3 to 5 new inches of snow with less than half an inch that night…
