Vero Beach intersection where rower was killed will get $3.7 million in safety upgrades

VERO BEACH — The intersection of Indian River Boulevard and the Merrill P. Barber Bridge, where a 20-year-old college student was killed in a two-vehicle accident about five years ago, is about to get $3.7 million in safety upgrades, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

Grace Rett — a student at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, and a member of its rowing team — was killed Jan. 15, 2020, when the van carrying members of the team to a practice at Vero Beach Rowing Center turned left from Indian River Boulevard and in front of another vehicle to cross the bridge. Rett was in the front passenger’s seat.

That intersection has long been identified by the Metropolitan Planning Organization as dangerous…
