California legislators want school districts to limit, prohibit smartphone use in schools

California school districts will be required to adopt policies that limit or prohibit the use of smartphones by students under a bill passed Wednesday by the state Legislature.

The measure, Assembly Bill 3216 , received overwhelming and bipartisan support from legislators and it will now head to Gov. Gavin Newsom. Earlier in the summer, the governor called for a statewide ban on smartphones in schools and just two weeks ago urged schools to restrict their use in classrooms before the academic year.

“It’s going to mean a lot for our students and our kids,” its author, Folsom Republican Josh Hoover , said in an interview before the final vote…
