* School community is important — perhaps even more so as the definition of that community evolves as part of a district’s transition. Given that this is the last year before Van Devender Middle School’s closure, one parent stepped up in a very big way to help students mark their place in that school’s community. Principal Kurt Echard said a parent, who wished to remain anonymous, was able to raise around $4,000 to buy the sweatshirts for each student. “She did a fundraiser and earned enough money to be able to get a gift for each student,” he said. Further, that parent and some school personnel were able to put together a party, complete with treats, hot chocolate and a movie. “It means the world to the kids,” Echard said. “The Vandy community is pretty tight, and they like to take care of each other. A parent stepping up and taking care of these kids is very important. We came together as a team to make it special for the kids.” What a wonderful Christmas present, and what a wonderful way to show those kids they are supported and cared for. Thank you, to that parent and everyone else who made it happen.
