– A powerful winter storm is set to blanket Maryland and surrounding areas with heavy snow and ice starting late Sunday. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for central Maryland, including Baltimore, from 10 p.m. Sunday through 1 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the warning, the region could see snow accumulations between 5 and 9 inches, with up to 12 inches possible in isolated areas if heavy snow bands develop. Ice accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch are also possible, particularly along major roadways, including Interstate 66. Hazardous conditions are expected to significantly impact Monday’s morning and evening commutes.

The storm’s heaviest snowfall is predicted overnight Sunday into early Monday, with a potential lull during Monday afternoon. However, another round of heavy precipitation is likely Monday evening before tapering off early Tuesday.
