Washington D.C. Police Seize 34 Firearms in a Week Amid Efforts to Curtail Gun Violence

The ongoing issue of gun violence and the increase in firearms in Washington, D.C., has led the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to adopt a proactive strategy for recovering illegal firearms, as detailed in their recent report. From Monday, September 16, through Monday, September 23, MPD announced that their officers confiscated a total of 34 firearms, an ongoing effort to interdict the tools that arm the impulses of the city’s violent offenders and to reduce the overall crime rates.

According to the MPD’s release, the recovered weapons included a range of handguns and assault rifles from various locations across D.C., together with several arrests, the suspects’ names and charges range from carrying a pistol without a license to possession of unregistered ammunition and large capacity ammunition feeding devices, arrests that raise questions about the intersection of public safety and civil rights.
